External Noise Canceling Analysis for an Urban Environment in Lima

Resumen

Lima faces a significant problem with noise pollution, especially in urban areas. The urban population has increased in recent years, contributing to the problem. The World Health Organization recommends lower noise levels to protect human health. Traffic and industrial activities are the predominant sources of noise pollution in Lima. Traffic noise can reach up to 85 decibels, especially during rush hours, while industrial activity produces noise levels of up to 75 decibels, posing health risks to residents and workers. If the problem of noise pollution is not addressed, people exposed to high noise levels will suffer significant hearing damage in the future. However, technological advances offer potential solutions, and noise reduction methods, including noise cancellation devices, can play a crucial role. This work aims to analyze the three most commonly used algorithms: Least Mean Square (LMS), Normalised Least Mean Square (NLMS), and Recursive Least Square (RLS) for noise reduction in an urban environment. We analyzed the performance of these algorithms in five different locations in Lima. It is possible to reduce the noise in different scenarios, with NLMS being optimal. Noise reduction analysis allows future applications in physical IoT devices. They reduce noise for the well-being of users.
