Abstract

In Peru, according to data from the National Police of Peru, in 2018, 90056 vehicle accidents were recorded, of which 2.1% were due to mechanical failures [1]. This falls directly on the quality of its components, mainly those associated with the transmission system. Therefore, the present investigation examines the shift knob button fatigue failure mechanism of an SUV with an automatic transmission. The methodology is supported by the experimentation of Shore D hardness of the button and determining the elastic coefficient of the spring. Button fatigue analysis was performed with ANSYS Workbench. The result determined the fatigue failure with a very short useful life, equivalent to 458 days until the component failure in 5 039 cycles for a maximum stress of 3.68 MPa. Finally, stress was reduced to 1.79 MPa, extending component life up to 3.95x105 cycles when the geometry of the most critical zone was replaced by a 0.3 mm radius splice.
