He is an Associate Professor at the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC). He received the Ph.D. in Computer Science and Robotics from the University of Toulouse III (France), carrying out doctoral research at the Systems Analysis and Architecture Laboratory of the French National Center for Scientific Research (LAAS-CNRS). He obtained the degree of M.Sc. in Computer Vision from Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, United Kingdom), the Universitat de Girona (Spain) and the Université de Bourgogne (France). He obtained the B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering at the Catholic University of Santa María, and in Industrial Engineering at the National University of San Agustín. He has completed a Postdoctorate at Duke University (USA) in the Intelligent Movement laboratory of the Department of Computer Science. Likewise, he has been a visiting researcher at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU-USA) and has participated with the CMU Robotics Institute and the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC-USA) team at DARPA. Robotics Challenge (DRC), being one of the winning teams. Previously, he was part of the Research Center for Robotics and Underwater Vision (Spain) and the Control Systems, Automation and Robotics Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). He received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots in 2015 (IEEE's top conference worldwide specialized in humanoid robotics). He is a frequent reviewer for international conferences and journals on robotics and machine learning. His research areas are applications of machine learning and deep learning to intelligent systems and the extraction of information from data. He researches autonomous robotics and motion control for mobile and redundant robots based on computer vision and deep reinforcement learning.
