Dr Aoife Bennett is an award winning interdisciplinary environmental geographer specialising in the sustainability, governance and conservation of the Amazon. Her research bridges political ecology, environmental geography and conservation science, with particular expertise in rural, peri-urban and urban Amazonian territories, tropical forests, peatlands, land-use change and sustainable livelihoods. She works at the interface of social and natural sciences, combining participatory and intercultural research with spatial and environmental analysis to understand complex socio-environmental change. A central focus of her work is developing equitable approaches to conservation and sustainability that recognise traditional and local knowledge while addressing poverty, environmental justice and territorial governance. Dr Bennett has led and collaborated on interdisciplinary research across the Amazon and works closely with Indigenous organisations, communities, universities, governments and international partners. Her work seeks to translate rigorous scientific research into practical solutions and policy, strengthening locally grounded approaches to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development.
